To the owners, GMs, night audit warriors, and the hoteliers in between who keep the lights on,
It’s 6 a.m. somewhere right now, and someone’s already at the front desk.
Not because they have to be. Their shift doesn’t start for another hour. But the overnight team member needed to leave a little early to get their child on the bus, so they came in. Nobody will mention it in a meeting. It won’t show up on a KPI dashboard. It’ll just be one more thing that got handled, quietly, the way most things in this industry get handled.
That’s what Labor Day always makes me think about. Not the barbecues or the long weekend, but the fact that the industry this country is thanking today is largely staffed by people who don’t get the day off. Hospitality doesn’t pause for the holiday that’s supposed to celebrate it.
I don’t think that irony gets said out loud enough. So I wanted to say it.
I spent years on the other side of this industry, and it took getting close to a hotelier who was struggling to see what the day-to-day asks of the people doing it. It’s the GM who’s also running the front desk because someone called out sick. The owner who bought the property because they loved hospitality and now spends half their week untangling things that have nothing to do with why they got into this business. The small team pulling off a five-star welcome on a two-star staffing budget, because the guest in front of them shouldn’t have to know what it took.
We see you. The special moments of hospitality don’t happen by accident. They happen because you make them happen. It takes real care to turn a stranger into someone who feels at home, shift after shift. That is the work of a maker, and it deserves to be celebrated.
Hoteliers, take care of yourselves this weekend, and hopefully you can squeeze in a few moments of rest.
